This past March I had the pleasure of creating the wardrobe for my dear friend- Ben Skipworth’s creation: “Rite of Passage.” Ben is one of the most hardworking and talented folks I know, so I was really thrilled to be able to costume the characters for this project. I’m also over the moon that I was also cast to play the mother in this magical piece. The project comes out soon and there are some really exciting surprises that I cannot wait to share- but for now- y’all can get a look inside of how I created the wardrobe for this wonderful short.
First off- I have to give an immense thank you to to the folks at Goodwill for allowing me to pull all of our items from their stores. I made 2 mega-trips, one to the Antioch Location and another to the Hendersonville store, and was truly blessed by the thrift Gods with the items I found. I think I just about died when I found a perfectly fitting teal blazer and detailed cuff and collar button up for the Dad character. In my hunt, I found some really spectacular dresses- but chose to keep things relatively simple for the mom- and I had so much fun pairing the yellow dress with my Grandmothers vintage broach and the tie necked blouse for the aunt. Wardrobe on a set at times is a blend of: character creation, color palette and what can you find. Ben is really amazing to work with and really trusted me to create what he needed- so I didn’t have to change anything. My goal was to create a really quirky/nerdy vibe with plaid woven all about and subtle dusty pops of retro colors.
My onset assistant was the supa-fab Destiny DeStefano and she and I were dying over how many times we said things like, “gentle plaid” “subtle dusty color play” and the like. The lingo gets real wild (and awesome!) when you are creating this sort of swag. Here are the photos we snagged of all the fantastic onset fashion. The quirk just kills me!
Thrifting is always a blast- but when you get to use it to create a while story- it’s the freaking best!
