Short hair with no product is just alllll bad. If don’t use pomade at my current length- I end up looking like some sort of mixture between early years Justin Bieber and my 9 year old self. However, if you have a pixie cut, you will most likely be putting whatever product you are using all up in your bangs and around your face- which can lead to a whole other set of problems. I was using Got 2b texturizing creme and not only did it seem to be drying my hair out; but my forehead started breaking out VERY badly and very endlessly.

I decided to try my hand at some DIY pomade and I’m super happy with the results. Here is the recipe and some pics to show you the sheen level and hold 🙂
I learned about the wonders of putting clay in your hair way back in 2008 when after spending a week at Burning Man with several dust storms (which are made of clay/dust particles from the remains of a dried up lake bed) By the end of the week my hair had the most bad ass texture ever; as a result of being super dirty, but filled with clay. Since then I have always used Kaolin Clay as a dry shampoo and hair styling tool. Hell- I used Kaolin for all sorts of things, but I’ll share all that in blog future. I scoped out some pomade recipes online- but decided to create my own using Clay for better texture and less sheen.
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon grapes oil
- 3 tablespoons Kaolin Clay
- 2 1/2 tablespoons Beeswax Pearls
- Desired essential oils (some ideas: lavender, lemon grass, pine, blood orange, rosemary)
In a small clean pan on very low heat (you may also use a double boiler, or set a glass or ceramic bowl in boiling water) warm coconut oil and carrier oils (olive and grape seed in this case- but you can choose your own) add beeswax and stir till melted. Stir in clay and add essential oils (10 or so drops for mild scent and as much as you desire for stronger scent.) Ensure all ingredients are mixed and melted. Pour into container and allow to cool for 10-20 minutes.
Tips:
- If you want to check the consistency of your blend before pouring it out to dry- take out a spoonful and allow that to harden (it will do so fast) then check it and tweak ingredients to your liking.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of Black Strap Molasses if desired
- For containers you can use old altoids tins, jelly jars, short baby food jars, or anything else you can think of. You can also buy containers online Here.
- One of the coolest things about this pomade- is that you can use it in a pinch as lip balm, cuticle cream, etc. I’ll share some more refined versions for these specific things in the future- but it’s nice to know that what goes on your hair can go on your mouth as well. 🙂
- This is also great for taming frizz and piecing out longer hair- just use a tini tiny amount- warm with your hands and work through hair.
I’m totally in love with the result! When I use just a little it creates great texture, tames frizz and may hair is dreamily soft, shiny (but not too shiny) and touchable. When I use a lot- it’s a chunkier look and heavier feel, but still flexible and smooth. The whole things took me about 20 minutes to make and it’s soooo cheap! (not to mention environmentally friendly)
I’d love to hear back from you all on how this works for you!
Love and Thrift,
Elisabeth
Awesome idea and your hair looks fabulous!

Thanks Laura! I use a tiny dab to handle frizz and more for added texture 😊 I’m sure that recipe tweaks (like more clay or adding molasses) would create different desirable textures 😊
